The painting captures the disenfranchisement of the individual, whose representation here is appropriately that of an escargot, who trudges along quite slowly in the world, much like the individual. The shocked look portrays the abhorrent feeling that we all as individuals face on a day to day basis, always looking out to avoid the dryness of a searing sun, or the cruel playfulness of prepubescent children or the inebriated whose thoughts of sprinkling salt is akin to the daily misfortunes that we all encounter everyday. Truly a masterpiece of emotional conveyance in its inate simplicity.
